Protect Rape Victims From the Threat of Deportation

Target: Dianne Feinstein, California Senator

Goal: Allow victims of sexual assault to report their crimes without fear of deportation.

The Los Angeles police department is noticing a sharp decline in reported rapes among the Latino population. This, unfortunately, doesn’t actually mean that fewer rapes are happening. The Trump administration has been openly discriminatory against Mexicans and plans on deporting undocumented immigrants en masse. With these facts in mind, it’s far more likely that the decline in reported rapes is not a result of fewer rapes, but instead, because the victims are afraid of being deported.

Even if the victim is not an illegal immigrant, someone in their family could be. Most rapes aren’t committed by strangers, they’re instead perpetrated by friends, family members, and romantic partners. This further complicates the issue because the victim may feel loyalty to his or her attacker, who may be in the country illegally. Domestic abuse victims also face this same issue, especially parents who may have their children’s well-being to worry about as well. Please sign this petition to give amnesty to victims of violent crimes.

Dear Ms. Feinstein,

Rape disproportionately affects women and minorities, and the current administration is no friend to either. The fear of deportation is valid, and it’s preventing victims from coming forward and seeking justice. Regardless of anyone’s stance on immigration, it’s not okay to leave victims in abusive situations, and no one wants rapists free and walking the streets. Protections must be put in place for undocumented immigrants to safely report violent crimes against them without fear that they will split up their families or even be deported themselves.

The knowledge that the victim can’t report the crimes will only serve to embolden rapists and abusers. These crimes are about power, and there is a profound power in this situation for them. They know that there will be no consequences and that is exactly why they would pick undocumented immigrants to prey upon. Rapists typically will have multiple victims throughout the course of their lives, so letting them go unreported directly supports the rapist’s actions and ensures that more crimes will happen. Mothers being abused may also fear that they will be deported, leaving just their abusive husbands to raise the children. Please take action to protect victims of violent crimes, no matter where they came from.
