Stop Persecution of Gay Soldiers in South Korea

Target: General Lee Soon-Jin,  Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Republic of Korea Armed Forces

Goal: End the persecution of the LGBT community in South Korea’s army.

Gay South Korean soldiers already had much to fear, but now military investigators are hunting down and prosecuting servicemen following a video that was posted on the internet of two male soldiers having sex. The army is conducting a criminal investigation into the filming and posting of this video, but denies allegations that they are using it as an excuse to more broadly weed out gay soldiers throughout the military.

In South Korea, the LGBTQ community is harshly stigmatized. All men — regardless of sexuality — are required to serve for two years in the military, but gay men are banned from engaging in any homosexual behavior during their mandatory duty. They are therefore forced to try and hide their sexuality, living in fear of reprisals, being regarded as dangerous criminals, and even facing prison time. According to human rights lawyer Han Ga-ram, “Hate crimes against LGBT people are already a serious problem, and the government could make it worse by sending the wrong message by punishing gay men in the military.” Sign below to demand that South Korea’s military stop persecuting gay soldiers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear General Lee Soon-Jin,

The inhumane persecution of gay soldiers in South Korea’s military must end. A community that already lives in fear of discrimination and hate crimes now has even more to fear following the posting of an internet video of two male soldiers having sex. Many fear that the military investigation into this incident has a wider scope than just the video.

Further, punishing gay men in the military — who are required to serve but must hide their sexuality while they do so — sets an example that could make hate crimes and discrimination worse even outside of the military. I urge you to end the persecution of South Korean gay soldiers.

Sincerely,
