Save Public Land From Coal and Oil Pollution

Target: Ryan Zinke, U.S. Interior Secretary

Goal: End leasing of land to fossil fuel industries on U.S. public land.

Since taking office, President Trump has been working hard to ensure fossil fuel companies have as much support as they need to keep polluting our ecosystems by selling leases for coal, oil, and gas extraction on public lands. While Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke calls himself an admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, his record thus far shows he is no conservationist. Under his leadership, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has made the largest sale of oil and gas drilling rights in years and finalized a 55 million ton lease for coal extraction.

To make matters worse, the BLM is known for selling fossil fuel rights at below their true value, especially considering the external costs that burning fossil fuels impose on society, such as increased asthma and cancer rates, ecological pollution, and climate change. Unfortunately, this means taxpayers are getting a bad deal, as the government sells public land rights for below their true value and then leaves citizens to suffer from environmental and health problems that these leases cause. Though the BLM under the Obama administration sought to put a moratorium on leasing and generate a social cost of carbon to be considered when leasing fossil fuel rights, President Trump has done everything he can to make good on campaign promises to support fossil fuel groups.

Running the government this way is simply unsustainable, for our environment, society, and economy, and the sooner our politicians realize this, the better. Sign this petition to show that you care how your hard-earned tax dollars are spent, and that you won’t stand for policies that serve polluting corporations rather than the ecosystems and people that make this country so great.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Interior Secretary Zinke,

In the past few months since your nomination, the Bureau of Land Management has acted to expand the sale of oil, gas, and coal extraction rights on public lands. The BLM’s mission is “to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations,” but by leasing our precious natural resources to large corporations, the health and diversity of these lands will decline and future generations will be left to pick up the polluted pieces.

By selling fossil fuel rights to these corporations, you are not only facilitating the pollution of lands you swore to preserve, but also making a bad deal on behalf of taxpayers. Because the price of leases does not take into consideration the social cost of fossil fuel extraction and burning, you are ensuring that oil, gas, and coal companies are not paying for the true cost of their product’s use, and are instead dumping these costs, like cancer and pollution, onto taxpayers.

Rather than support large corporations in their pursuit of profit at all costs, I urge you to use your position to work for the benefit of the public and its lands, and put an end to fossil fuel leasing on them.

Sincerely,

no coal! no oil! save the lands!

  2. Don’t tell us you’re an admirer of Theodore Roosevelt, Secretary Zinke. Talk is cheap. Show us instead.

  3. Stop & pursue this criminal rabble and this deformity  –  instantly!
DEMAND ALL PERSONS RESPONSIBLE IF NOT ABLE TO ACT IN A REASONABLE WAY TO START TO PAY REPARATION TO FUTURE GENERATIONS!

  4. END ALL PUBLIC LANDS USED FOR COAL AND OIL POLLUTION NOW.

  5. Nice deal for both the government and the fossil fuel industries. The government gets to collect MONEY for leasing the land, and the big corporations get to do what they LOVE MOST – go in and rape, pillage and destroy everything possible, and rake in enormous piles of CASH while doing so.
These handy little deals done by corrupt and greedy people will greatly contribute to the destruction of America’s wildlife and land, if allowed to go ahead.
