Demand Trump Apologize for Claiming Korea Was “Part of China”

Target: U.S. President Donald Trump

Goal: Demand Trump apologize for saying South Korea was once part of China.

U.S. President Donald Trump is no stranger to political gaffs and outrageous claims. Whether it’s calling Mexicans “rapists,” or demanding a “complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” Trump has a bad habit of offending vast groups of people in short periods of time. This time, he’s managed to anger a country of 50 million people – a country that also happens to be one of the U.S.’s closest allies in Asia.

In one of his most baffling claims to date, Trump told the Wall Street Journal, “Korea actually used to be a part of China.”

This claim has no factual basis. The closest China ever came to conquering Korea was around 200 B.C., when the Han Dynasty occupied a chunk of the northern end of the Korean Peninsula. The two countries also arguably came somewhat close to political integration in the 13th Century, after both were conquered by the Mongols. Regardless, South Koreans have slammed Trump over the remark, with one unnamed foreign ministry official dismissing the claim as “worthless to respond to.”

“Whether that is true or not, Korea hasn’t been a part of China for thousands of years and it is an historical fact that the international community acknowledges and no one can deny it,” the anonymous official told Yonhap, South Korea’s largest news agency.

Meanwhile, a former South Korean diplomat, Rah Jong-yil told The Telegraph Trump’s comments were “very disturbing to us.”

“It shows his shocking ignorance of the situation in north-east Asia,” he said.

The U.S. president shouldn’t be an international symbol of ignorance and misinformation. If you agree, demand Trump apologize.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

In a recent interview, you erroneously claimed Korea was once Chinese. In reality, China and Korea represent two distinct cultures, with separate languages, customs and traditions. It should be no surprise then that many Koreans have been infuriated by your inaccurate claim, which has no historic basis.

The closest China ever came to taking over the Korean Peninsula was well over two thousand years ago, when a chunk of the region’s north was occupied by the Han Dynasty. Since then, Korea has seen conquerors come and go, including the Mongols, and later the Japanese Empire. Through all of this, Korea has always remained distinctly Korean. Today Koreans are rightly proud of their heritage, history and culture. As such, we urge you to apologize for your inaccurate claim that Korea was once part of China. It’s offensive, ignorant and simply wrong.

Sincerely,
