Target: Chris Turner, Texas State Representative
Goal: Reject bill that would make it easier for political figures to sue journalists and newspapers.
A bill in Texas, if passed, will rob journalists around the state of their First Amendment rights. The bill would allow public figures and politicians to sue journalists and newspapers and force reporters to disclose their sources. This bill would practically eliminate the freedoms of speech and press in Texas.
If journalists are afraid of being sued, they will be less likely to pursue critical stories that demand attention, like stories about corruption and police brutality. Any story that sheds light on a public figure taking advantage of his or her power and status could potentially put the journalist in legal danger.
We live in a dangerous time during which reporters can be silenced with unfounded cries of “fake news.” This bill in Texas cannot pass. Sign the petition and demand that lawmakers in Texas reject this legislation and protect the constitutional rights of journalists.
Dear Representative Turner,
A proposed piece of legislation in Texas stands in complete contrast to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. If passed, this bill will make it easier for politicians and other public figures to sue journalists, newspapers, and other media sources for “libel.”
The public depends on journalists to shed light on the day’s most controversial topics. However, this cannot happen if journalists fear for the safety of both themselves and their sources. Lawsuits have the potential to destroy media outlets forever. I ask that you and your fellow members of the House reject this law and protect the constitutional rights of our free press.
