Clear Slum Streets of Human Waste

Target: William Ruto, Deputy President of Kenya

Goal: Provide the funding needed to set up a sewage system and clean water supply in the Kibera slum.

The streets of the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, are littered with plastic bags filled with human excrement, dumped there by residents with no sewage system and no direct supply of clean water. Local groups have come up with numerous innovative solutions to the problem but they need government support to help them roll these out across the slum. Join us in demanding that the Kenyan government provide this vital funding.

In Kibera, locals call the bags of human waste “flying toilets,” a name that masks the degrading and dangerous reality of life lived without appropriate facilities. With the river and streets filled with sewage and vast amounts of litter, dangerous illnesses are rife in the slum. Making matters worse, the lack of plumbing means clean water is only provided up to the borders of the slum where so-called “water cartels” provide poorly organized, above-ground pipes to individual homes. Human sewage from the “flying toilets” contaminates these pipes, greatly increasing the spread of waterborne diseases.

Locals are setting up innovative solutions including toilets that link up to biogas chambers that provide gas that is then used to bring clean, hot water to the community, as well as providing jobs for residents. But, no matter how hard they work, they cannot set up these or other facilities on a large enough scale without backing from their government. Sign this petition and tell the Kenyan government to support their citizens in solving this health crisis.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Kenyatta,

The Kibera slum in Nairobi has no sewage system and no direct access to clean water. As a result, the residents are forced to dump human waste in plastic bags in the streets. Diseases are rife and the situation is widely considered to be a growing health crisis.

Many of your citizens are working to provide solutions to this problem, including innovative ideas such as setting up toilets that feed biogas chambers used to heat water used for bathing and cleaning. However, they are unable to establish facilities like this on an appropriate scale without financial backing from the government. I urge you to support your citizens in their efforts and provide them with the money they need to set up reliable sources of clean water and adequate means of disposing of their sewage.

Sincerely,

  1. The Kenyan government needs to get it’s act together. How can they allow this to happen in their country, and especially in the capital city of Nairobi?? This is disgusting and a hazard to the health of everyone there.

  2. Absolutely Angry says:

Wake up you dirty bastards in charge. You have a duty to take care of your country and your people! Get it together for the masses!
