Protect Birds From Cruelty in Farms and Labs

Target: Sonny Perdue, Head of United States Department of Agriculture

Goal: Expand the Animal Welfare Act to protect birds.

Back in 1966, the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was signed into law and is the only Federal law that regulates the treatment of animals that are commercially bred and transported, used in research, and exhibited to the public. The law protects and demands a minimum level of care for these animals. Unfortunately, the law does not protect birds and it is time for that to change.

Birds are incredibly intelligent, social and curious animals that deserve protection as much as the chimpanzees, monkeys, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits do. Unfortunately, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has failed to expand this protection. Without protection, breeders and handlers will continue to be allowed to stuff these birds into small, cramped cages, deny them veterinary care, and not give them sufficient needs to survive including food, clean water and sunshine.

Sign this petition and demand the USDA expand the AWA to protect birds. Not only are birds intelligent, but they can feel pain just like you and me, and it is time to prevent unnecessary cruelty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Perdue,

The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) is the only Federal law that gives protection to animals used in research, that are commercially bred and transported, and exhibited to the public. Unfortunately, the law only covers about ten percent of animals, including chimpanzees, monkeys, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits. The law does not protect birds and it is time for that to change.

Birds are incredibly social, curious and intelligent animals. They also can feel pain, just like you, me and the animals we share our homes with. Without AWA protection, breeders and handlers can continue treating birds with no respect for their well-being. They will still be allowed to stuff birds into small, cramped cages, deny them veterinary care, and not give them sufficient needs to survive including food, clean water, and sunshine.

Please consider expanding the AWA to include and protect birds. These animals need and deserve our protection from unnecessary and preventable cruelty.

Sincerely,

  1. Dr. Tony DeLia says:

Sonny Perdue is the Adolf Hitler of large scale abuse and mistreatment of animals. One of his first acts after Trump appointed him as USDA chief was to take down the government’s online database of convicted animal abusers and cruelty cases. The best thing that can happen for animals, especially in the massive culture of inhumane evil known as Big Ag, is to get rid of Sonny Perdue.

    • Totally agree with you. And once he’s gotten rid of, I think all farms and labs should be gotten rid of. They are houses of horror for the poor animal victims; and they are sheltering havens for sadistic animal abusers.

  2. EXPAND THE ANIMAL WELFARE ACT TO PROTECT THE GREAT BIRDS.

  3. Mary Smith says:

No animals, including birds, receives protection under the AWA. It may be an animal welfare act on paper. That is all it is. The USDA has no regard for the well being of animals. The USDA exists for and acts on behalf of Big Ag, the very people that breed, neglect, abuse, injure and slaughter animals for meat,
dairy products, gelatin, eggs, leather, fur, feathers and down.
