Require Pet Stores to Partner with Rescue Groups

Target: John Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado

Goal: Require pet stores to partner with animal rescues to help decrease the number of shelter animals.

Shelter animals are at a disadvantage when it comes to being adopted. The push to end commercial breeding is getting stronger and many pet stores no longer sell dogs from breeders. But shelter pets need to get out of the shelter where they can be seen. With the help from big pet stores like PetSmart and Petco, shelter animals would have a better chance at being adopted.

One of the many problems facing shelter animals is the shelter itself. Not many people want to go into a shelter and search for their next companion. Shelters have a reputation of being loud and overcrowded. The animals there are scared and often appear to be lacking personality or desire. However, with the help of pet stores, shelters would have great locations to hold adoption events. People looking for pets could adopt their animals and get all the supplies they need in one spot. Pet stores tend to be brighter and more welcoming than animal shelters.

If a pet store advertises an adoption event, the chances are that more people would come simply because pet stores have great publicity. People are also familiar with pet stores and their layouts. They aren’t foreign and sterile environments that people tend to avoid, like animal shelters. Another bonus of having a pet store advocate for shelter animals is that people will be more likely to avoid breeders if they see a trusted pet company supporting an animal shelter or rescue group.

Shelter animals need all the help they can get when it comes to finding a loving home and pet stores are always looking for ways to improve and expand their customer base. Chain pet stores often offer training classes for puppies and older dogs. It would reflect highly on both the pet store and the shelter animals if the class demonstrator was a dog from the local shelter. People would begin to change their perceptions about animal shelter pets after seeing a success story in their local pet store. Please sign this petition and urge Colorado to create pet store and rescue group partnerships.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear John Hickenlooper,

Shelter animals need some help when it comes to getting adopted. Not everyone wants to walk into an animal shelter looking for their next friend. This means shelter pets are losing out on finding forever homes. If pet stores were to partner with rescue groups and shelters, more animals would be adopted.

Pet stores could hold adoption events where people are more likely to come, especially if there are discounts on animal supplies. A family could come in and adopt a shelter pet, and at the same time, purchase all the supplies they need. Potential adopters would be seeing these animals in a more relaxed environment where their personalities could shine through.

As an additional bonus, shelter pets would get a better reputation if more pet stores partnered with rescue organizations. Dog obedience class could be taught by an employee and a local shelter dog. Families looking to adopt a cat could spend some time with a local shelter cat while they learned about the best products and food. With so many animals being euthanized in shelters every year, it’s time we did something to help them find their forever homes. I urge you to create pet store and rescue group partnerships and bring an end to the plight of shelter pets.

Sincerely,

This will be a win- win for the animals and people – so do it!!

  2. Absolutely Angry says:

It’s a no brainer, they’ve already started this in San Francisco, California, with success! Breeders should be few and far in between and pet stores need to step up making shelter animals a top priority to get into the right home with the proper background searching tools at hand!
Please encourage your state along with others to start trend in helping all these defenseless animals who have such a slim change of survival. It’s the right thing to do!

  3. MAKE ALL PET STORES USE RESCUE ANIMALS FOR SAVING MORE HOMELESS ANIMALS LIVES NOW.

  4. all pets/animals should be adopted instead of buying them in a store.
people should learn to take their responseblility to take care for their pets.
