Target: John J. Manfreda, Administrator of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau
Goal: Require alcohol manufacturers to label their products with all ingredients.
Currently, there is no requirement for alcohol manufacturers to list ingredients on their products. This is dangerous for adult allergy sufferers and for anyone with other dietary restrictions. Celiac disease prevents sufferers from drinking beer but most other alcohols are fine. Amaretto contains almonds, and frangelico contains hazelnuts. Some alcohols are distilled with nuts, and eggs and soy are also common ingredients. If a person suffers from any of these allergens, a simple bar outing can feel like walking through a minefield.
Allergies aren’t the only reason to list ingredients on drink labels. High sugar contents need to be avoided by some people, most notably diabetics but also those just trying to eat healthier. Vegans may be surprised to find eggs or milk in certain drinks. It’s also important that alcohol manufacturers are held accountable for the ingredients they use, something impossible to do when no one is really sure what’s in the products. Sign this petition to require ingredient labeling on all alcoholic beverages.
Dear Mr. Manfreda,
Ingredient labeling for alcoholic beverages needs to be federally mandated. It’s ridiculous that companies aren’t required to list them. There are a number of reasons someone might want to avoid a particular ingredient, whether they have moral convictions against the use of a product or were recommended to avoid it by their physicians. As it is now, it’s exceedingly difficult to stay safe while drinking alcohol. Some companies will list a few ingredients on their website, but they rarely will have a comprehensive list available to the public.
Manufacturers need to be held accountable for the ingredients they use to make their products, and it’s much easier to do that when the ingredients are publicly known. High fructose corn syrup is just one of many chemicals people try to avoid in the name of their health. If inferior ingredients are being used, consumers will know to purchase their alcohol from a better company or one more in line with their values. Picking out a beverage from the many available would be much easier for customers if they were able to actually make fair comparisons between multiple drinks. Please require a full list of ingredients for all alcoholic beverages.
