Stop Rampant Logging and Forest Destruction

Target: Jan Szyszko, Polish Minister of Environment

Goal: Stop private landowners from being able to cut down any number of trees without informing or getting authorization from the government.

A new law change in Poland has led to what has been dubbed a “massacre of trees.” This law allows private landowners to cut down as many trees as they want without getting authorization from the government. They also don’t even need to inform the government before doing so. This amendment took away a former rule that made sure landowners first applied for permission.

The change was enacted at the beginning of the year, and activists have noticed an increase in tree-falling in areas all around Poland from the countryside to bigger cities. Since landowners no longer need to inform authorities when trees are being cut, there are no accurate statistics to represent how many trees have been cut down since the law was changed.

The law is meant to prohibit these landowners from engaging in commercial activity themselves on any land that has been recently cleared of trees. However to get around this, a company can sell the land to a private owner who then gets the trees removed and sells the land directly back to the same company. Commercial gain is still happening because of this destruction and more trees are being unknowingly cut down every day.

Sign this petition to reverse this law amendment and make sure that private landowners are still required to get permission before they can cut down large numbers of trees.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Environment Minister Szyszko,

Your recent amendment to a Polish law has led to a massacre of trees in your country. Private landowners are cutting down as many trees as they want and they no longer need to get permission or report to the government when doing so. This can ultimately have devastating impacts on the Polish environment.

Since landowners no longer need to report tree-cutting to the government, there are no accurate statistics to represent the destruction that has already occurred. But it is noticeable in many areas of Poland including both the countryside and big cities.

Many citizens are outraged by this destruction because they and many others around the world believe that efforts should instead be enacted to help protect the trees. We highly encourage you to reverse this amendment and to consider introducing legislation that helps save trees instead of destroying them.

Sincerely,
