Keep White House Visitor Logs Public

Target: Reince Priebus, White House Chief of Staff

Goal: Continue the practice of releasing White House visitor logs.

The Trump administration has announced that it will discontinue an Obama-era policy of voluntarily releasing names from White House visitor logs. The administration claims this move is in reaction to “grave national security risks and privacy concerns,” and that it will save taxpayers around $70,000 over the next four years.

The White House will now only release information about visitors to the parts of the White House that are considered separate government agencies, such as the Budget Office. The names of those who visit Donald Trump, Mike Pence, or any of the senior White House staff will be disclosed publicly at the discretion of the administration.

After several months of the administration being under scrutiny for misleading the press and the public, plus the complicated network of alleged ties between Trump and Russia, this decision only reinforces the idea that the administration wishes to hide its inner workings from the public it supposedly serves. Sign the petition below to voice your opposition to this lack of transparency in the Trump White House.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Priebus,

The Trump administration has announced its plans to discontinue the Obama-era practice of disclosing White House visitor logs voluntarily. While this decision is allegedly being made due to security and privacy concerns, it reads as yet another example of the Trump White House’s lack of concern for transparency in its dealings and relationship with the public.

This administration has been the subject of intense controversy regarding honesty and transparency. For example, Press Secretary Sean Spicer has a history of being combative and dishonest with the press, while several members of the Trump team are linked to an investigation regarding Russia and potential manipulation during the November election. The decision to diminish the amount of information the White House publicly discloses is cause for concern, considering these issues.

I ask that you work with the White House staff, Donald Trump and Mike Pence to reconsider and reverse this decision. This administration’s job is to serve American citizens, not to withhold information from them regarding who meets with the country’s leaders.

Sincerely,
