Stop the Import of Shark Fins to Europe

Target: Jean-Claude Juncker, President of Europen Union Commission

Goal: Stop the import of shark fins to Europe by closing the loophole that is allowing this to happen.

The shark and marine organization Bite-Back exposed a loophole in European legislation that allows anyone entering Europe to bring 20 kg (around 44 lbs) of shark fins in as part of their personal import allowance.

Bite-Back, which is based in the U.K., made this connection in 2015 and significant changes have yet to be made. Bite-Back emphasized the fact that this current legislation ignores the fact that scientific evidence led the International Union for Conservation of Nature to declare that 25 percent of all shark species are threatened with extinction.

Shark fins serve as a big incentive to fishermen, who hunt tens of millions of sharks every year. Most of the shark fins brought in by travelers are sold in large amounts to restaurants for a decent profit. On the black market, 20 kg of shark fins can sell for around $6,000.

Whale and dolphin meat, as well as seahorses and sea cucumbers, are banned from the personal import allowance. The same rationale that banned those items should be placed on shark fins as well. Sign the petition below to demand that the necessary changes be made to close this loophole in legislation and stop the importation of shark fins into Europe.

Dear President Jean-Claude Juncker,

Shark fin imports are threatening many shark species with extinction and a loophole in European legislation has helped to keep this inhumane import and the sale of shark fins going.

Travelers can bring up to 20 kg of shark fins into Europe as part of their personal import allowance. Whale and dolphin meat, as well as seahorses and sea cucumbers, are banned from this allowance and the same rationale should apply to shark fins. Shark fins are being sold in large numbers on the black market and being used by many different restaurants. This gives fishermen the incentive to keep hunting them and does nothing to help the fact that many species of shark are on the verge of extinction.

We encourage you to review this legislation and help make the necessary changes to protect the sharks and end this ridiculous trade of fins for profit.

  2. Yes, shark finning is extremely cruel, and leaves the sharks to suffer horribly and die as a result. This cruel torture of poor innocent sharks should be banned WORLDWIDE, not only because they are endangered, but because it’s CRUEL.

  4. Cynthia Mattera says:
