End Child Labor in Belize’s Sugar Industry

Target: Hon. Hugo Patt, Minister of Labor, Local Government and Rural Development

Goal: Punish sugar companies utilizing illegal and dangerous child labor.

In the sugar fields of Belize, child labor is rampant, putting children as young at 14 at risk of abuse. These children should be in school and be given the chance to simply be children, yet they are being forced to work in the sweltering sugar fields for very little money.

Fair trade and farmers associations in the country have long lobbied to bring an end to child labor. Recently, the nation’s government has implemented a National Child Labor Committee, the goal of which is to bring an end to the nation’s child labor.

However, there is still so much more than can be done. Millions of tons of sugar cane are produced per year. The government should work to make sure that none of this sugar cane is produced at the exploitation of young children. Sign the petition and ask that it identify those farms and fields that continue to use child labor and seriously penalize them.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Patt,

Although the government of Belize has made great strides in remediating child labor in the nation’s sugar fields and on its sugar farms, there is still much work that can be done to keep children safe. Millions of tons of sugar cane are produced in the country each year. It isn’t known how much of that comes from illegal child labor.

The government should seek out, identify, and penalize those farms and fields that are currently using child labor. Children deserve the chance to be children, go to school, and look towards a safer, healthier future. I ask that the government enact stricter regulations against child labor.

Sincerely,

    no more extra sugar!

  2. People should be boycotting the companies who use child labor in the sugar industry. If we are buying sugar from Belize, we may be ourselves participating in the horrific child labor business.
