Target: David Eggen, Minister of Education for Alberta, Canada
Goal: Stop making misleading, offensive comparisons between abortion and the Holocaust in high school classes.
An Alberta high school is facing heavy criticism since a presentation given in a mandatory religious class compared abortion to the Holocaust. The presentation, which was filmed by a student brave enough to share the footage with relevant authorities, contained multiple inaccuracies as well as offensive references to Auschwitz and the genocidal ideologies and actions of the Nazis. The government of Alberta must act to prevent such disgusting incidents happening again.
The group responsible for the presentation, Red Deer Pro-Life, remains defiant in the face of widespread criticism. They have not pledged to correct the inaccuracies or biased language employed in the presentation and insist that, while they might not show the same video again, they will continue to compare abortion and the Holocaust. Many see this response as further highlighting the group’s refusal to acknowledge any wrongdoing or take responsibility for any offense caused by an inaccurate and inappropriate presentation.
Among those criticizing the group’s actions is Alberta’s Minister of Education, David Eggen. Mr. Eggen is reported to have described the presentation as ‘completely outrageous’ and as ‘hateful propaganda’ that has ‘no place in our schools.’ He has also apparently addressed the Red Deer School Board and passed the matter on to district authorities. However, sexual education advocacy groups are calling for a stronger response that includes updating the sexual health curriculum and issuing an immediate order that non-teacher presenters must be government approved. Sign this petition and tell Mr. Eggen that he must do everything he can to prevent school children being exposed to such offensive misinformation again.
Dear Mr. Eggen,
I write to you regarding the recent incident at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School, in which school children were exposed to a presentation that included misinformation and offensive remarks comparing abortion to the Holocaust. That a third-party, politically-motivated group was able to provide such a presentation during a mandatory religion lesson is entirely inappropriate and utterly unacceptable.
I appreciate that you yourself have spoken harshly about the issue and have played a significant role in moving the situation forward. However, I call on you to use your position to do more to ensure that such an incident never happens again. Specially, I ask you to follow the advice of sexual education advocacy groups and update Alberta’s sexual health curriculum, investigate all third-party sexual health educators, and issue an order stating that all presenters must be government approved. By taking such steps, you can play a vital role in ensuring that school children receive accurate, age-appropriate information rather than deceptive, biased, and offensive misinformation. Thank you taking this matter seriously.
