Do Not Allow MOAB Bombs to Kill Civilians

Target: General John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan

Goal: Do not use MOAB bombs or similar massive weapons in areas where civilians could be harmed.

The U.S. military announced it dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb in history over a system of caves and tunnels reportedly used by ISIS fighters. The bomb — the MOAB or Massive Ordinance Air Blast — weighed over 21,000 pounds and delivered a payload of over 11 tons of explosives. It has been nicknamed, “The Mother of All Bombs.”

While the military claims to have taken precautions to avoid civilian casualties, the bomb’s blast radius was over a mile wide, meaning that anyone within several square miles of the drop site would likely have been killed.

While the U.S. military is currently assessing the damage done, this marks a harrowing moment and an escalation in America’s military power in the region, and could set a dangerous precedent for more massive strikes that could put innocent Afghan citizens in harm’s way. Bombs of this magnitude have the capability to devastate the landscape and environment, and level sections of cities.

Civilians in both Afghanistan and Pakistan have already been killed in a number of drone strikes carried out by the U.S. military in recent years, and now could find themselves with nowhere to hide if more mammoth bombs such as the MOAB are put into use.

While the fight against violent extremists such as ISIS is important, we must not allow innocent men, women and children to be considered acceptable “collateral damage” in America’s ongoing War on Terror under the Trump administration. Sign this petition to tell General Nicholson that these bombs must only be used under extreme circumstances, and without the risk of losing civilian lives.

Dear General Nicholson,

The use of enormous explosive weapons such as the MOAB have great destructive potential which could kill thousands of civilians if not used with extreme prejudice. In light of the recent dropping of MOAB bomb in the Achin Province of Afghanistan, it must be reiterated that all precautions must be taken to avoid the loss of innocent lives. A bomb which has a blast radius of over a mile has a huge potential to hit far more than the intended targets.

For the sake of America’s moral standing and esteem among other nations, as well as for our continued relations with the Afghan government, I urge you not to continue use of these massively powerful weapons unless absolutely necessary, and without putting innocent people in harm’s way.

  2. Karma..Karma..karma..everybody pays for these crimes..even the righteous. War is not an option. When innocence is destroyed and animals are blown to smithereens and women are raped and maimed. There is no justification. We were given a superior brain to be utilized..use it to find peaceful solutions. First step..stop breeding.

  3. Trump is enjoying his revived popularity now that he’s bombing people to smithereens. Why would he stop?
