Stop Iran From Executing Four Homosexual Citizens

Target: Iranian President Ahmadinejad

Goal: Stop the execution of four Iranian men for being homosexual.

Four men from Choram, Iran have been sentenced to death by the Iranian courts for “sodomy.” This is horrifying and saddening news for the LGBT community as well as the rest of the free world. We must prevent the Iranian government from executing these innocent men.

Although being gay is not a crime based on Iranian criminal law, these four men (Saadat Arefi, Vahid Akbari, Javid Akbari and Houshmand Akbari) are suffering from the most direct assault against the gay Iranian community in months. The men’s sentencing coincides with the launch of the “LGBT Republic of Iran,” — “a pioneering report that documents the experiences of a diverse range of LGBT Iranians who live, or have lived, under the repressive, homophobic Tehran regime – and the importance of the internet to their lives, as a means to meet, support each other, learn about LGBT life in the outside world and evade the censorship of their government,” a statement from the Peter Tachell Foundation reads.

In September 2011 three Iranian men were executed for being gay. The men were hanged to death for engaging in gay sex. In April, The Guardian reported that Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi-Amoli, an influential cleric and an Islamic scholar based in Iran, referred to homosexuals as “inferior to dogs and pigs” in a speech. Javadi-Amoli went on to say, “If a society commits a new sin, it will face a new punishment. Problems like AIDS did not exist before.”

In no country should citizens be punished for their sexuality. We must stop Iran from putting these citizens to death.

Dear President Ahmadinejad,

Though many high-ranking court officials may personally believe that homosexuality is a sin, there is no Iranian law prohibiting it. Your citizens do not deserve to be punished for their sexuality. Laws exist to protect the citizens of a nation; but being homosexual hurts no one. Homosexuality does not merit punishment at all, and certainly not punishment by death.

The executions of Saadat Arefi, Vahid Akbari, Javid Akbari and Houshmand Akbari would set a precedent in your nation for irrational hate. Please stand up for the rights of your citizens, and stop the execution of these innocent men.
