Target: Brian Louie, Sacramento, California Chief of Police
Goal: Fire officer shown in video footage using excessive, unnecessary force against an unarmed African American man.
Video footage shows an unarmed African American man being choked and punched repeatedly by a police officer who approached the victim over a petty jaywalking issue. The victim appears calm, rational and non-confrontational, but the aggressive officer allegedly accuses him of having a weapon. The victim, Nandi Cain Jr., starts removing his jacket to show the officer that he’s unarmed, and the cop is seen charging at him before shoving him and throwing him to the ground. The victim is completely subdued on the ground, not even resisting, yet the officer proceeds to beat him. Eventually another cop arrives and handcuffs the victim, as if the excessive force wasn’t already overkill, and later Cain was released without any charges.
Cain, who says he was only walking home from work, never appeared to be a threat and he never resisted arrest. It appears as if the police officer reacted irrationally and with an extreme amount of violence, yet he was only placed on paid administrative leave. This is becoming almost a daily problem among law enforcement officers who seem to prefer abusing their badges and using extreme, unnecessary measures instead of serving and protecting their communities.
With the majority of police brutality cases being blown off, more and more people are subjected to abusive treatment by police. That’s why it’s necessary that we pressure the authorities to stop tolerating such widespread police brutality. Please sign this petition demanding that this officer be permanently fired for reportedly using excessive, unnecessary force.
Dear Chief Louie,
A police officer was caught on video throwing an African American man to the ground and using excessive force as he choked, punched and beat the submissive victim. The victim appears to be cooperating completely with the officer who confronted him for a petty crime of jaywalking. The officer accuses the victim of having a weapon, although he never appears to be armed or threatening. When the victim begins removing his jacket to try and show the officer that he’s unarmed, the cop can be seen charging at him and then throwing him to the ground before choking and punching him. Even once the victim is beyond subdued, another officer shows up to arrest him.
The police officer who was seen committing this disgusting act was only placed on paid administrative leave. We’re appalled that this unnecessary violence would be taken so lightly by authorities. We, the undersigned, demand that this officer be fired permanently for allegedly using excessive force on an unarmed, non-threatening man.
