Save Dolphins Allegedly Trapped in Small Enclosures

Target: Paige Sinclair, CEO of Dolphin Marine Magic

Goal: Demand Dolphin Marine Magic provide larger pools for its animals.

Australian theme park Dolphin Marine Magic says its dolphins are happy and healthy, but animal rights advocates disagree. The popular theme park in Coffs Harbor allegedly uses a show pool so small, it doesn’t even meet the legal minimum size required under New South Wales law, according to activist group Australia For Dolphins (AFD).

“Dolphins are also incredibly intelligent. When confined in swimming pools they can become stressed and aggressive, lashing out in frustration,” AFD says on its website.

Dolphin Marine Magic is now facing legal action from AFD, with the activists alleging the park has misled consumers by claiming its animal enclosure isn’t large enough.

“Just as it’s illegal to sell someone ‘free range’ eggs from hens in battery cages, the case alleges it’s against the law to tell people captive dolphins are ‘happy and healthy’, when scientific evidence shows they cannot thrive in concrete pools,” AFD advocacy director Jordan Sosnowski told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Dolphin Marine Magic’s management has denied wrongdoing, though the park is no stranger to controversy. According to the AFD, the theme park is already facing two separate investigations, including by the Veterinary Practitioners Board and the New South Wales state government. In 2016, the theme park was also the site of the death of a dolphin calf named Ji. According to Australian public broadcaster SBS, Ji died after “swallowing leaves, sticks and a small piece of metal” left in the pool. Even the park’s former owner, Hec Goodall, has criticized current management for its treatment of the animals. In 2014, he claimed the park “more or less got hijacked by shareholders with a more greed-driven attitude”.

If you agree this theme park should do more for its dolphins, please sign our petition.

Dear Paige Sinclair,

Your theme park, Dolphin Marine Magic, is currently facing allegations of keeping dolphins in unacceptably small pools. Under NSW law, dolphin enclosures must be at least 1.8 meters deep, with a minimum of 600 cubic meters of water. However, conservation group Australia For Dolphins has argued the show pool doesn’t meet this requirement. Facing legal action is something no business manager wants, but there’s a simple solution: increase the size of the show pool.

Studies have repeatedly shown dolphins need plenty of space to remain happy and healthy. Increasing the size of the show pool will no doubt carry a price tag, but activists say it may well be essential for maintaining the mental and physical health of your dolphins. It will also send a message that Dolphin Marine Magic cares about its animals.

Please, do the right thing, and increase the pool size.
