Protect Tunisia’s Free Press

Target: Beji Caid Essebsi, President of Tunisia

Goal: Protect the rights of journalists across Tunisia by ending government interference in the media.

The press in Tunisia is facing interference from the government. Although conditions have improved since the nation’s last president was removed from office, many controls on the media have not disappeared even with the strongman politician gone.

Currently, Tunisia is in a state of emergency, which enables the government to control and censor the media. Interviews have been blocked, criticism has been silenced, and even instructions have been given to journalists as to how they should do their job. Journalists have even been violently abused.

Freedom of the press should not be denied. Citizens need it to learn about the actions of their government. Sign the petition and demand that the press be protected, not abused by the government of Tunisia.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Essebsi,

After your predecessor left office, journalists in Tunisia believed that conditions for them would approve. However, journalists have still found themselves victims of violent attacks. They have found their words censored and their news silenced.

A free press is the only way a nation can thrive. It is the only way many citizens can actively learn about their government and its actions. A government will never gain confidence from citizens if it acts like it has something to hide. I ask that you and your government work to protect the press, not abuse it.

Sincerely,

  1. FREE PRESS IS THE RIGHT OF ALL PEOPLE AND THOSE THAT WOULD BAN IT HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE AND THE FREEDOM AND RIGHTS OF ALL HUMANS.

  2. A “state of emergency” is used as an EXCUSE by tyrannical governments to remove the rights and freedoms of it’s citizens. The REAL threat to most countries ruled by tyrants of course is the tyrants themselves. So they accuse their citizens of crimes to cover up the fact of their OWN criminality. If Tunisia is criminalizing it’s own journalists, I agree with Carole that they have something to hide. All the more reason for journalists to keep speaking out and exposing the truth.
