Ensure Marine Protected Areas for Scotland’s Whales, Dolphins and Purpoises

Target: Richard Lochhead, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment

Goal: Ensure a world-class network of marine protected areas is delivered in 2012 that includes protected areas for Scotland’s whales, dolphins and porpoises.

In May, the Government of Scotland will decide whether to include whales and dolphins in a marine reserve in the Hebrides. The currently proposed reserve only includes a small portion of the animals’ habitats, making it a half-hearted conservation effort. Scotland’s government needs to hear from concerned world citizens advocating for a world-class network of marine protected areas for the region’s whales, dolphins and porpoises.

The marine life of the Hebrides in northwest Scotland is a unique and diverse ecosystem where whales, dolphins and porpoises interact harmoniously. To combat human effects and habitat loss, the government made plans for a reserve. However, the proposed Hebrides Marine Reserve covers less than half of whale, dolphin and porpoise habitat sites. A protected area is of little purpose if the animals still face significant risk.

By signing the petition below, you will be giving strength to the environmental response pushing for stronger protections of the Scottish Seas. Urge Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment to ensure a world-class network of marine protected areas is delivered in 2012 that includes protected areas for whales, dolphins and porpoises.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mr. Richard Lochhead,

Currently, Scotland Government’s proposed Hebrides Marine Reserve reflects a a half-hearted conservation effort. The planned marine protected areas only include a small portion of vital habitats for whales, dolphins and porpoises. As important marine species of the Scottish Seas, these animals deserve complete protection.

As such, I strongly urge you to ensure a world-class network of marine protected areas is delivered in 2012 that includes full protected areas for whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Sincerely,
