Target: Sean Spicer, White House Press Secretary
Goal: Apologize for inaccurate and offensive comments on the use of chemical weapons in the Holocaust.
Sean Spicer appeared to forget the use of gas to murder millions of Jews and other victims of the Holocaust when he claimed that the Nazis did not employ chemical weapons in World War II. The comments were made during a daily press briefing in which he remarked that the conflict saw ‘someone as despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons.’ Spicer must publicly apologize for this insulting, insensitive, and ignorant mistake.
Spicer made his statement as part a condemnation of Russia’s support for President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, and it was in this context that he tried to justify his erroneous claims. However, the justification only compounded his error when he declared that Hitler ‘was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing’ and, in doing so, once again failed to recognize the many victims of the Holocaust.
After several more blustering mistakes, Spicer did eventually offer an explanation for his statements after the briefing had ended. In a later statement, he remarked that he was attempting to draw a distinction between the way chemical weapons were used in the Holocaust and the use of chemical weapons dropped from planes onto civilian population centers. He also clarified that he was not ‘trying to lessen the horrendous nature of the Holocaust.’ But despite these attempts to explain himself, Spicer has yet to correct his mistakes or offer an apology for his offensive and inconsiderate comments. Sign this petition and demand that he corrects himself and apologizes publicly for this shameful mistake.
Dear Mr Spicer,
I write to you regarding the comments you made at a recent press briefing. Discussing Russia’s support for President Assad’s regime in Syria, you incorrectly claimed that chemical weapons were not employed by the Nazis during World War II. After this mistake was noted, you further compounded your error by suggesting that, unlike Assad, Hitler did not use gas on his own people.
I appreciate that you later gave a statement claiming your comments were intended to draw a distinction between two different tactics in which gas has been used against civilian populations and that you did not intend to diminish the horrors of the Holocaust. Nevertheless, your original comments still failed to recognize the murder of millions of Jews and other victims of the Holocaust and your later statement failed to offer either a correction or an apology. I insist that you must recognize and correct your mistakes and offer a full apology to those you have offended.
