Do Not Bring Back the “War On Drugs”

Target: Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Goal: Do not return to harsher sentences and punishments for non-violent drug offenders.

The War on Drugs was an ineffective and dangerous political campaign that over-filled prisons with people serving life sentences for completely non-violent drug offenses, but the Justice Department seems poised to return the country to its old ways. This is evidenced in the appointments that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made to the inner circle of the Justice Department, like Steven Cook — a staunch supporter of the “War on Drugs” system.

After the Obama administration enacted a policy that reduced the harsh sentences for non-violent drug offenders, minority communities were able to at least begin the process of recovering from the grave toll that mass incarcerations took on their children and families, and civil rights groups supported this major step to make the criminal justice system more humane. Currently, the crime level in the U.S. is approaching near historic lows, but Sessions insists that a “dangerous new trend” is showing in certain cities, like Chicago, that have shown a spike in homicides. What would truly be dangerous, however, is a return to a faulty, unjust, and prejudiced system that disproportionately locks up minorities for non-violent offenses. Sign below and demand that the War on Drugs not be brought back.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Sessions,

The current rate of crime nationally is near historic lows, and when the Obama administration loosened from the “War on Drugs” mentality, the positive effects were undeniable. The “War on Drugs” system disproportionately locks up minorities, and tears their communities apart even when the offenders have committed no violent action whatsoever.

Prisons are already overcrowded, and it is unjust to sentence someone to decades in prison for a nonviolent crime. The old system was prejudiced and ultimately did not work. I urge you not to bring back the War on Drugs.

Sincerely,

  1. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

    no war on drugs!

  2. It’s common knowledge now that the “War on Drugs” NEVER had anything to do with concern for American people getting involved with drugs. It’s all political. The CIA itself was proven to have it’s very own drug-smuggling and drug-pushing ring, pushing drugs on it’s OWN people.
We need to stop believing government propaganda and start thinking for ourselves.
The “War on Drugs”, if revived, would victimize and criminalize many non-violent decent people, and ruin their lives; and who knows, the CIA may just turn out to be the ones who are smuggling and selling the drugs again.
