Protect the Great Barrier Reef From Destruction

Target: Dr. Russell Reichelt, Chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

Goal: Save the Great Barrier Reef from total destruction.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has been hit by bleaching for the second year in a row due to the increasing climate change crisis. Coral bleaching occurs when the oceans become too warm, doing great harm to the algae that live within them; if the coral does not return to normal color, the organisms will die. Right now, more than 70 percent of the Reef suffers from bleaching; a 50-mile stretch of the northern part has died within the last year.

The Great Barrier Reef is more than just a beautiful “heritage site” in Australia — it supports much of the aquatic wildlife of the area. Many endangered or vulnerable species rely on the Reef for roosting, breeding, and other important aspects of their lives. If the Reef dies due to bleaching, these animals will die out, too.

We cannot allow this beautiful and essential part of aquatic life to be snuffed out by climate change and related problems. We must demand stronger actions against global warming to keep the oceans cool and safe for the algae living inside the corals, as well as the many species reliant on the Reef. Sign this petition to help preserve the Great Barrier Reef.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Reichelt,

The Great Barrier Reef has suffered another devastating bleaching due to global warming. When coral turns white, it negatively affects the algae living inside, rendering the coral completely useless to the many endangered local wildlife that rely on it. This beautiful heritage site has suffered greatly due to global warming; a 50-mile stretch has died completely, and more than 70 percent of the Reef suffers from bleaching.

We cannot allow this to continue to happen. The Great Barrier Reef is much too important, not only as one of the great natural wonders of our world, but as a habitat to countless, vulnerable aquatic species. Please take stronger measures to protect this natural treasure from total, irreversible destruction.

Sincerely,

    restore reefs now!

  2. The Australian government apparently has been doing nothing to help the reef, which is appalling. It needs to take immediate steps to do so or the entire reef will be irrevocably destroyed.
The destruction of the reef is also partly caused by over-fishing, pollution from nearby farms, and the dumping of maintenance dredge spoil – all of which the government should be taking action about.
This beautiful reef WILL die if actions are not taken soon. This must not be allowed to happen.

  3. MUST STAND UP FOR THE SACRED CORAL REEFS NOW.

  4. Stop & pursue this criminal rabble and this deformity  –  instantly!
DEMAND ALL PERSONS RESPONSIBLE IF NOT ABLE TO ACT IN A REASONABLE WAY TO START TO PAY REPARATION TO FUTURE GENERATIONS!

  5. Stop destroying our planet.
