Stop Selling “Mexico Will Pay” Costume

Target: Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon

Goal: Remove the “Mexico Will Pay” costume jumpsuit from the Amazon marketplace.

Activists are criticizing Amazon for selling a zip-up, brick-patterned jumpsuit shamelessly emblazoned with the words “Mexico Will Pay,” in reference to President Trump’s insistence that Mexico will pay for his proposed border wall. To many, the proposed wall has become a symbol of the president’s racism and xenophobia, which he’s expressed in derogatory comments about Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.

In 2015, Trump infamously kicked off his presidential campaign by describing Mexicans as “rapists” and claiming that “they’re bringing drugs…[and] crime.” Since then, Trump has accused a federal judge of being unable do do his job because of his Mexican heritage, repeatedly lashed out at Mexican-American journalist Jorge Ramos and accused the Mexican government of intentionally sending “the bad ones over because they don’t want to pay for them.” During his campaign, he even attacked one of his Republican primary rivals, Jeb Bush, because he “speaks Mexican.”

Hence, it’s no surprise many Mexicans and Mexican-Americans view the proposed wall as emblematic of a wave of racism. Trump’s rhetoric is more than just words. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, domestic extremist hate groups have exploded since Trump was elected. In just the first 10 days of his presidency, the Center recorded over 800 cases of alleged bias-related incidents.

Racist rhetoric has real world implications. Human rights advocates say this kind of rhetoric emboldens extremists, and opens the floodgates of racism and discrimination. In this context, symbols of xenophobia and racism like this insensitive costume further promote a climate of hate. Please sign our petition to demand that Amazon pull this product.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Bezos,

Today, human rights advocates say we live in a time of surging racism, spurred on by President Donald Trump’s divisive comments about Mexicans. The centerpiece of this rhetoric is his proposed border wall with Mexico. For many, this wall has become a symbol of racism and hatred of Mexicans.

A costume available on Amazon allows buyers to literally dress up as this wall. This costume is insensitive and hateful. By selling it, Amazon is condoning racist rhetoric. We therefore urge you to order the removal of the “Trump Mexico Will Pay Zip Up Costume Jumpsuit” from Amazon’s website. Amazon is a place for shopping, not for hatred.

Sincerely,
