Don’t Legalize Discrimination Against LGBTQ Citizens

Target: Kyle McCarter, Illinois State Senator

Goal: Rescind introduced “religious freedom” legislation that would harm the rights of LGBTQ citizens.

Illinois state senator Kyle McCarter introduced a piece of legislation in the state’s general assembly that would make it legal for businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQ community under the guise of “religious freedom.” Businesses will be allowed to deny their services to these individuals simply due to their sexual identity or orientation.

Illinois is not the first state to introduce such legislation. Since Donald Trump took office, many state governments, and even U.S. congressmen, have broached similar “religious freedom” legislation. Currently, the governments can take action against businesses that discriminate against the LGBTQ community. McCarter’s bill would prevent this.

This bill does nothing but use religion as a disguise for bigotry and hatred. This bill lets business owners completely ignore federal regulations and pick and choose which laws they want to follow. It doesn’t protect their religious beliefs. It only harms the rights of others. Sign the petition and demand that this bill be rescinded before it can ever reach the assembly floor for a vote.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator McCarter,

You have recently introduced a bill to the Illinois General Assembly that would allow business owners to refuse services to members of the LGBTQ community based on their own personal religious beliefs. This bill amounts to nothing less than blatant discrimination.

Although you may claim this bill will protect religious liberties, it does so at the cost of the rights of other Americans. As the Supreme Court and other federal courts continue to rule in favor of LGBTQ equality, you would do best to progress with the times instead of hold our nation back. I ask that you rescind your introduced legislation.

Sincerely,
