Stop Excluding LGBTQ Community From National Census

Target: John H. Thompson, Director of the U.S. Census Bureau

Goal: Add questions about LGBTQ identity to the national census in 2020.

The Census Bureau will not add any questions in regards to sexual orientation or gender identity to the 2020 census, therefore choosing to ignore an entire group of Americans in the LGBTQ community. While the census has never before asked questions about LGBTQ identity, an early draft of the 2020 census seemed to show that the Census Bureau would finally recognize this community. However, all LGBTQ questions disappeared when the draft was presented to Congress.

With recent reports suggesting that a growing number of American millennials identify as members of the LGBTQ community, to not include any LGBTQ questions on the next census is to virtually ignore a large portion of the American people.

The government must realize that erasing LGBTQ identity from the census will not “erase” the LGBTQ community. They are a community that cannot and should not be ignored. They are a community that deserves the same rights, justice, and respect as any other. Sign the petition and demand that LGBTQ questions be added to the census.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Thompson,

Despite early drafts that showed the 2020 census would include questions about the LGBTQ community, the most recent and final draft has erased those questions. The Census Bureau is virtually ignoring an entire community of Americans.

It is time the LGBTQ community be recognized in the census. They are a community that deserves the same rights and respect as any other community and deserves to be recognized in the census so that their needs and rights can be addressed by the government elected to represent all Americans.

Sincerely,

  1. I think it’s really none of the government’s business what sexual orientation anybody is. Why should we have to report to the government anyway about our sexual orientation?!!
At any rate, they already know because they have continuing ongoing access to ALL our internet activity and phone activity.

  2. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

why would you erase lgbts and nonbinary gender people from history? why would you erase lgbts and nonbinary gender people from the census?
