Don’t Dump Toxic Industrial Waste Into Waterways

Target: Jim Justice, Governor, West Virginia

Goal: Veto proposal that would see toxic chemicals discharged into waterways.

More industrial waste could be discharged into valuable waterways should a bill recently approved by the West Virginia legislature be passed into law. This continues a legacy of weakening environmental protections at the behest of powerful coal companies.

Under the proposed law, companies would be granted pollution discharge permits based on an amended standard which significantly increases the amount of waste allowed. The new discharge limit would be one of the highest in the country. Impact of the increased water pollution may never be fully measured as legislation passed in 2012 significantly restricted water quality monitoring conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection.

Decades of heavy coal mining and deregulation has already had a grave impact on water sources in the state. A 2012 review by the state Department of Environmental Protection found that over 40 percent of streams and rivers were heavily polluted. Less than 25 percent are open for full recreational purposes such as fishing due to water contamination concerns.

It is time for the political leadership in West Virginia to finally advocate for public health instead of commercial interests. Please sign the below petition demanding that the governor veto this bill.

PETITON LETTER:

Dear Governor Justice,

I am writing to demand your veto of House Bill 2506. It will allow for increased discharge of industrial waste and contribute to the already declining health of state waterways. The Department of Environmental Protection has found that over 40 percent of streams and rivers are polluted, with only a quarter fully open for recreational activities.

Please demonstrate your commitment to environmental health and public safety in rejecting this legislation.

Sincerely,

  1. The government’s catering to big business is unconscionable. This bill is really abhorrent and should never be passed.
