Target: Crisanta Duran, Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives
Goal: Do not threaten the existence of Colorado’s rural hospitals by enacting enormous budget cuts.
Some hospitals in Colorado are facing the possibility of shutting down, as a new budget plan cuts over $500 million in payments for the otherwise uncompensated costs of caring for low-income populations. This is part of a $26.8 billion budget bill that has been approved by the Colorado Senate and will move to the House.
These cuts could force certain rural hospitals to close their doors, leaving their communities in danger. Although the Senate hopes to offset these losses in a separate bill, as Senator Andy Kerr says, “This is an admission of failure, not as individual but as an institution. We were sent here to make tough decisions and make wise compromises. I see clever accounting tricks, but I do not see the wisdom that we are all capable of.” Sign below and do not allow these dangerous cuts to hospital funding to be approved.
Dear Speaker Duran,
The enormous cuts that Colorado hospitals are facing in the new spending bill are unacceptable. Some rural hospitals are at risk of closure if they are unable to cover the costs of caring for low-income populations.
Those people deserve health care just as much as the rest of the state, and that right should not be threatened by massive budget cuts. I urge you not to approve the $500 million of cuts to Colorado’s hospitals.
