Target: John H. Thompson, Director of the United States Census Bureau
Goal: Ensure that LGBT citizens will be included in the 2020 census.
The Census Bureau will not be including their initially planned questions pertaining to sexual orientation, according to a draft of the 2020 census. This has drawn anger and harsh rebukes from the LGBT community, who feel they are being “erased.” The National LGBTQ Task Force sees it as yet another attack on LGBT people and an attempt to deny them the rights they deserve.
The census is extremely important in that it helps the government enforce laws and allocate funds to whoever needs them the most; this is evident in the Fair Housing Act and the Violence Against Women Act. LGBT citizens need to be included in this to ensure that they, too, have access to the rights, services, and protections they need. LGBT people have struggled long and hard to gain fair and equal treatment, and they could lose out on much-needed services and protections if they are excluded from the census.
We need to make sure that everyone in this country, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, or mental health is able to access what they need to survive. Sign this petition to ensure that the census will include LGBT citizens come 2020.
Dear Director Thompson,
Your draft for the 2020 census erased the questions regarding sexual orientation after plans to include them, much to the ire of LGBT activist groups and the community at large. The U.S. Census is a very important factor in ensuring both the enforcement of certain laws and the allocation of government funds to programs needed by certain demographics. Without being included in the census, LGBT people will not be able to access the protections and services they need.
You must correct this mistake. LGBT people have fought too long and hard for their rights to be excluded from something this important, and they need to be included now more than ever in the groups who will be accounted for over the next four years. The 2020 census must include them. Please ensure that it does.
