Target: Oleg Baranov, Moscow City Police Commissioner
Goal: Release peaceful demonstrators arrested for protesting corruption.
Hundreds of peaceful protesters, including anti-corruption leader Alexei Navalny, were arrested and many are still being detained in Moscow for attending rallies condemning government corruption in Russia. As the U.S. State Department stated, “detaining peaceful protesters, human rights observers, and journalists is an affront to core democratic values,” and must not be allowed to stand.
Even though one of Putin’s spokesman said it was “illegal” to even encourage people to attend the rallies, they occurred nationwide on a scale not seen in years as Russian citizens demanded their rights. Police responded with tear gas, barricades, and the arrests of over a thousand peaceful protesters, some of whom are still being held. This detainment is a blatant violation of human rights. Sign below to demand the release of all peaceful demonstrators.
Dear Commissioner Baranov,
The detainment of human rights demonstrators following rallies protesting government corruption is a violation of the core of democracy, and cannot continue. With other democratic countries watching, this cannot stand.
Hundreds of people were arrested for peacefully taking part in these protests, including human rights observers and journalists, and many are still being detained. I urge you to respect democracy and human rights, and immediately release all peaceful protesters.
