Protect New and Rare Fish Species from Extinction

Target: Inger Andersen, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Goal: Classify a newly discovered, rare catfish as endangered in order to protect it from extinction.

A new species of catfish has been discovered in Brazil, but it is already facing extinction. The rare armored catfish, called Aspidoras mephisto, can only survive in the caves of South America.

Because its habitat is so restricted, the catfish is already facing extinction due to human activities such as deforestation, mining, and water pollution. The fish depends on the roots of plants in shallow water as a food source, but the destruction of tree cover has made it harder for the fish to get food.

The discovery of a new animal species is always exciting, yet protections must be in place to ensure that this species can thrive. Sign the petition and ask the International Union for Conservation of Nature classify the catfish species as endangered so that it can receive better, stronger protections.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Andersen,

The discovery of a rare species of catfish has excited scientists and researchers in South America. However, this newly discovered catfish, Aspidoras mephisto, is already facing extinction due to human activity such as deforestation, pollution, and mining.

The catfish depends on its unique, restricted habitat to survive. However, there are currently no protections for the new species. If it was classified as endangered by your organization, it could be better protected and saved. I ask that the IUCN classify this new catfish as endangered.

Sincerely,
