Stop Using Bug Secretions to Make Candy

Target: Todd Siwak, CEO of Ferrara

Goal: Stop using lac bug secretions in Ferrara’s candies.

The popular candy company Ferrara, which is known for candies such as Red Hots, Lemonheads, Boston Baked Beans, and Atomic Fireball, uses bug secretions in many of its products. There are alternative recipes that do not use bug secretions that the company already utilizes. It is time to use the alternative recipe for all the candies.

The secretions come from lac bugs and about 100,000 are killed for a pound of shellac flakes. These flakes are combined with confectioner’s glaze to make the hard shell that encompasses Red Hots, Lemonheads and Boston Baked Beans. However, Ferrara’s Atomic Fireball candies do not use bug secretions for its hard shell.

Sign this petition and demand Ferrara stop using bug secretions in all of its products. The company already has all the information and tools to succeed in making bug-free candy so it would be an easy transition and spare countless lives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Siwak,

It has recently come to my attention that your company uses bug secretions for many of its candies. However, there are alternative recipes that you are already utilizing for your Atomic Fireballs. It is time to start using this bug-free recipe for all of your candies.

About 100,000 lac bugs are killed in order to collect a pound of shellac flakes. The flakes are combined with confectioner’s glaze to make the hard shell that encompasses Red Hots, Lemonheads and Boston Baked Beans. Not only is it unnecessary and cruel to kill these bugs, but many consumers are quite disgusted upon hearing what is really in their candy.

Please consider no longer using lac bug secretions in your candies. You already have the information and tools to succeed in making bug-free candy. This simple change will spare countless lives.

Sincerely,

no more candy! ban candy now!

You know this is disgusting right?

  3. Bugs are animals too! The breeding and killing of these animals is unnecessary and cruel.
And most people don’t know that the “shellac” listed as an ingredient in candies is derived from these bugs. Which, as you say, Frances, is disgusting.
This “shellac” labeling is also unfair to vegans, who don’t want to participate in any animal cruelty.

  4. Lets ensure internationally that the vile company Ferrara and others who kill lac bugs go bankrupt.

  5. BUGS DON’T HAVE A PLACE IN CANDY… WTF THIS IS GROSS!!!

  6. This petition needs to be written better, to address the fact that the vast majority of people find it gross and disgusting that bugs are ingredients in so many varieties of this company’s candy. It is also unethical to not list insects in the igredients listings, so that vegans would be forewarned before eating the candy. Just as, Jell-o and other gelatin companies should list if their gelatin is made from pigs or cows, or some other hooved animal. Some people have allergies or health or religious restrictions, and some people just don’t want to inadvertently eat anything made with animal byproducts. These companies need to be more honest about what they’re putting in our food!
