Target: Dick Durbin, Senate Minority Whip
Goal: Support Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s filibuster against Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer recently announced his intention to organize a Democratic filibuster against the appointment of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Gorsuch is an extremely right-wing nominee, and Schumer believes he would not provide an adequate check on the Trump administration as a Supreme Court judge. Gorsuch is not “a neutral legal mind,” Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor, “but someone with a deep-seated conservative ideology.”
In the past, Gorsuch has demonstrated a willingness to protect big business over workers. He is also a supporter of religious freedom bills, which often serve to enable discrimination in the name of religious beliefs. Women’s healthcare, worker protection, and LGBT rights could be significantly impacted and threatened by the appointment of such a conservative nominee to the empty Supreme Court seat.
Schumer will be voting against Gorsuch’s appointment and has urged other Senate Democrats to vote the same way, effectively preventing the nomination from being approved with the necessary 60-vote majority. Republicans make up a majority of the United States Senate but number only 52 senators.
Dear Mr. Durbin,
Senator Schumer recently called for a Democratic filibuster against the appointment of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, citing that Gorsuch’s ultra-conservative ideology would not provide an adequate check on the conservative Trump administration.
Judge Gorsuch has dodged several questions throughout his nomination hearings this week, and in his answers to others conveyed an extremely right-wing leaning that makes him a questionable addition to the current Supreme Court bench. His willingness to protect big business at the expense of workers, as well as his support of potentially discriminatory religious freedom legislation, would prevent him from providing an independent assessment of actions taken by the Trump administration.
Since Donald Trump assumed power in the White House, his administration has launched attacks on minority groups that Judge Gorsuch would likely sympathize with as a Supreme Court Justice. The system of checks and balances necessitates that the judicial branch check the power of the executive branch, and Judge Gorsuch is an unsuitable Supreme Court nominee in that regard. I urge you to support Minority Leader Schumer’s attempt to block the Gorsuch appointment by voting against his appointment to the Supreme Court.
