Urge Police K-9 Units to Use Rescue Dogs

Target: Vic Davis, Sheriff of Clay County

Goal: Praise the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for using rescue dogs as new police K-9s.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina has recently introduced its two new K-9s who happen to be rescued pit bulls. Phantom and Sarah are now proud members of the Clay County Sheriff’s office and will be assisting as narcotic detection dogs.

Phantom and Sarah came from two different shelters where their futures were uncertain. Thankfully, two different rescue groups stepped in to save each dog and then trained them for a life in law enforcement. Not only does this save dogs’ lives but it also saves taxpayers thousands. Typically, police departments spend up to $20,000 for a purebred German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois, but rescuing from shelters typically costs just a few hundred dollars.

This is truly a win-win situation for all involved. Sign this petition to show your support for introducing rescued dogs to K-9 units.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheriff Davis,

I would like to thank the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for making the compassionate choice to add two rescued pit bulls, Phantom and Sarah, to its K-9 department. Pit bulls have an unfair reputation; however, your office was willing to look past that and try out new types of police dogs. Typically, police departments will spend up to $20,000 for a purebred German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois. By choosing to rescue instead, your department not only granted two dogs a safe, stable future, but also saved taxpayers thousands of dollars.

Thank you for being so innovative and willing to try out rescue dogs as K-9s. I can only hope more police departments follow in your footsteps.

Sincerely,

This is the most sensible thing I have heard in a very long time. Cross bred dogs are just as smart as purebreds and in most cases have less Medical problems as anything not strong in one breed is often strong in the other breed. Purebred is merely a status symbol with nothing to do with the dogs intelligence or capability. Good for any Police Force who will take a Rescue dog and turn it into a much needed member of society. I hope the rescue places wave or at least discount adoption fees. These dogs will be doing a great service to all of us.
