Target: Raquel Reedy, Superintendent, Albuquerque Public School District
Goal: Punish high school coach accused of insensitivity towards bullied girl.
An Albuquerque high school coach allegedly told a girl to “get over it” after her fellow cheerleaders took nude photos of her and posted them online, upsetting the girl greatly. Additionally, the victim was reportedly told to apologize to her teammates for “overreacting to a joke” and the coach allegedly refused to cooperate when the police tried to investigate the incident. The girl’s parents have sued West Mesa High School and are demanding an undisclosed amount in punitive damages.
The alleged actions of this coach are completely reprehensible. In an era where too many students have already had their lives ruined by bullying on and off the internet, for an authority figure to take the side of the perpetrators is disgusting. This coach needs to be severely disciplined for their reported cruelty and possibly even removed from their position at the school. It is bad enough when authority figures turn a blind eye to bullying, but this coach essentially encouraged it and rewarded the perpetrators for their disgusting behavior.
Bullying needs to stop, and one of the most important steps to take is to ensure that all authority figures in schools will protect victims. Sign this petition to demand punishment for this coach.
Dear Mrs. Reedy,
Several coaches in your employ reportedly told a girl to “get over it” after the was viciously bullied; her fellow cheerleaders posted nude photos of her on the internet. Additionally, the cheerleading coach in particular tried to force the girl to apologize to her alleged tormentors.
This behavior is only feeding the epidemic of bullying that has been going on for years; this girl is just one more victim who did not deserve to be humiliated and harassed, and the coach has basically taken the side of the perpetrators. This is not acceptable. This coach needs to be investigated and disciplined for their alleged cruelty, and made to apologize to the girl. d.
A coach is an authority figure who is supposed to set a good example and be responsible for the well-being of students. These coaches, especially the cheerleading coach, have violated what being a teacher stands for. Please hold them responsible for their reported behavior.
