Justice for Schizophrenic Prisoner Allegedly Burned to Death by Guards

Target: Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Miami-Dade State Attorney

Goal: Resign for refusing to charge prison guards for the death of schizophrenic inmate Darren Rainey, who burned to death in a scalding hot shower.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle will not press charges against the prison guards who allegedly locked inmate Darren Rainey in a burning hot shower for two hours until he died. With such a horrific death at hand during a time where it’s increasingly obvious that police officers and prison guards abuse their power, it is reckless and cruel for Rundle to not press charges and allow a jury to decide if these guards are guilty. Demand Rundle resign for her mercilessness and ineptitude.

Rainey, who was schizophrenic, was allegedly thrown in a shower by the guards with water estimated to be as hot as 180 degrees, or hot enough to boil tea. Rainey was reportedly heard screaming and begging to be taken out because he couldn’t take it anymore as prison guards laughed and taunted him.

Rainey was locked in the shower for two hours until he was found dead on the floor with burns covering 90 percent of his body and his skin red and falling off.

Rundle’s office announced that the four guards would not be charged because “The evidence does not show that Rainey’s well-being was grossly disregarded by the correctional staff.’’ The announcement was buried in a Friday afternoon news dump where Rundle’s office probably hoped no one would pay it much mind.

That a state attorney responsible with serving justice could be so heartless and negligent is incredibly dangerous. Rundle has shown she does not care about prison inmates and is not fit for her job. Demand that Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle resign for allowing these prison guards to walk without so much as a trial.

Dear Attorney Rundle,

The death of Darren Rainey is one of the most horrific cases of alleged fatal abuse in a prison in recent years, and yet his family will never have the opportunity to see justice because you have allowed the prison guards accused of burning him to death to walk free.

To essentially deny all evidence that a crime may have been committed and to not even give a jury the chance to decide if these guards are guilty is careless and disgusting. It appears you lack any compassion and will remain on the side of prison guards even when they may have done wrong. You are not fit to serve as Miami-Dade State Attorney, and I demand you resign.

  1. This woman Katherine Rundle is obstructing justice by her refusal to charge the prison guards. It seems, in fact, that the evidence DOES show these guards were negligent or even homicidal.
She has shown her incompetence by this decision and should step down.
