Don’t Allow Children to Work in Deadly Conditions

Target: Jim Risch, Idaho Senator

Goal: Throw out legislation that would make it easier for minors to work in the deadly conditions of the logging industry.

Senator Jim Risch of Idaho has teamed up with Senator Angus King of Maine to draft legislation that would allow children as young as 16 to work in the logging industry and operate heavy and deadly logging equipment and machinery.

This legislation directly impacts family logging businesses and will allow parents to employ their children. The senators say that this legislation will benefit family businesses. However, if passed, it will come with deadly consequences. In 2015 alone, more than 570 people were killed in the forestry and agriculture industry, including logging.

This legislation will put minors in danger and allow families to take advantage of the child labor at their disposal. Casualties in the forestry industry are the highest out of any industry and an unimaginable number of children will undoubtedly be seriously injured or killed should this legislation pass. Sign the petition and demand that the legislation be thrown out.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Risch,

Recently, you introduced legislation that would allow family logging businesses to employ children as young as 16. These children would be allowed to operate heavy logging equipment. You argue that this legislation is in the best interest of family businesses. However, the deadly effects that could arise from this are unimaginable.

The logging and forestry industry already has the highest casualty rate out of every single industry. In 2015, more than 570 people were killed. This legislation will be used as a way for businesses to exploit cheap labor. Children across your state and across the nation will be put at risk. I ask that you throw out this legislation.

Sincerely,
