Target: David Pemsel, CEO of Guardian Media Group
Goal: Applaud The Guardian for deciding not to move into a building with ties to the Trump family.
After outcry from employees, The Guardian US decided not to purchase and move into a Brooklyn property owned by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law. Reporters for the paper were rightfully worried about their ability to freely write stories and interview sources should they work out of a building with such close ties to the First Family.
The Trump family is no friend to the press. The press is constantly under attack by Trump and derided as “fake news.” Trump has constantly talked about punishing the press and suing reporters and sources. Unsurprisingly, purchasing property from the Trump extended family made reporters dedicated to telling the truth very frightened.
Had the newspaper decided to move to this building owned by Kushner, it would have undoubtedly created a conflict of interest, and perhaps have even made it easier for Trump to infringe upon the freedom of the press. Sign the petition and thank The Guardian for listening to its employees and cancelling the move.
Dear Mr. Pemsel,
The Guardian US was recently considering a move to a property owned by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and his business partners. Unsurprisingly, this news caused great distress for your reporters. The press has been under constant attack by the Trump family. Your reporters worried about the conflicts that could arise should the paper purchase a building with such close ties to the First Family.
However, you listened to your employees and decided against the move. I would like to thank you for hearing the concerns of your employees and for taking actions that will protect the freedom of the press from outside influences. During this time, the nation needs a free press now more than ever.
