Commit to Ending Deforestation by Chocolate Industry

Target: John Bilbrey, President and CEO of The Hershey Company

Goal: Thank the Hershey Company for taking a stand against deforestation.

The Hershey Company has joined 11 other chocolate companies in signing a pledge to end deforestation by the cocoa industry. Cocoa is one of the leading causes of deforestation in West Africa.

Chocolate production has had a destructive effect on tropical landscapes of Earth’s southern hemisphere. Twenty-three protected areas in Côte d`lvoire have been lost to cocoa production and forest space has decreased by nearly 70 percent.

Other companies taking a stand against deforestation include Ferrero, Mars, and Nestle. This fall, all of the chocolate companies will meet in Germany and draft a plan to bring an end to the destruction. Applaud Hershey’s, one of the most popular candy companies in the world, for taking action to protect our fragile environment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Bilbrey,

I want to thank you for joining 11 other chocolate companies and committing to the elimination of deforestation. Some of Africa’s most fragile tropical forests have been destroyed because of chocolate production.

As a leading chocolate producer, your actions will have a great impact on other agricultural companies. I look forward to the release of your deforestation prevention plan later this year and hope that your company will continue to strive to be more environmentally responsible.

Sincerely,
