Stop Suffocating Sharks for Photo Ops

Target: Hugo Sanchez Montalvo, Mayor of Isla Mujeres

Goal: Stop Playa Tiburon from letting customers lift sharks out of the water for photo ops.

A popular restaurant off the coast of Cancun, Playa Tiburon, has been letting customers lift nurse sharks out of the water in order to take photos. Not only can sharks not breathe when they are out of water, but their bodies are at serious risk for injury. It is time Playa Tiburon stop exploiting these sharks for profit.

When sharks are lifted out of the water, the process of suffocation begins. On top of that, these animals and their bodies are designed to be under water, not under the pressure of gravity. Being out of the water can cause serious harm to their skin, muscles and organs. In addition, these sharks are kept in a small sea pen where customers are allowed to swim. The small space and close quarters is extremely stressful for the sharks and is an overload for their highly developed sensory systems.

This interaction is not only dangerous for the sharks, but also the people. Nurse sharks are very gentle creatures, but it is only a matter of time before one gets fed up and bites a customer. Sign this petition and demand the restaurant stop exploiting these sharks and put them back in the open ocean where they belong.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Montalvo,

A restaurant in Isla Mujeres, Playa Tiburon, has been allowing customers to lift nurse sharks out of the water for photo ops. This is incredibly dangerous not only for the sharks, but for the customers as well. It is time to stop allowing this cruelty.

These sharks are being repeatedly lifted out of the water, causing them to suffocate while also seriously harming their skin, muscles and organs, as their bodies are not designed to handle gravity’s pressure. In addition, the sharks are kept in a small sea pen where customers are allowed to swim. The close quarters is incredibly stressful for the sharks and is an overload for their highly developed sensory systems. Nurse sharks are very gentle creatures, but every animal has its limit. It’s only a matter of time until a shark bites a customer.

Please consider banning this activity and allowing these sharks to go back to the open ocean. It is incredibly cruel to keep these animals imprisoned just for profit.

Sincerely,

    Animal Welfare Over Profits!!!

  2. What’s wrong with people?? How can they do this to the poor sharks? How can they be proud of a photo of themselves holding a shark who is suffering horribly?
For the restaurant, yes it’s about profits. For the people participating – what’s wrong with them?? Is it vanity? A cruel nature?
Stop this horrible cruelty to poor innocent sharks and send them to a sanctuary or back out in the ocean where they belong.

  3. free the sharks back to their habitat now.
