Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States
Goal: Disavow and condemn the racist, white nationalist remarks of his fellow Republican lawmaker.
Republican lawmaker Steve King has recently tweeted: “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.” His words ignited the support of white nationalists around the country with its blatant racist and anti-immigrant sentiment. Although he has claimed to disavow David Duke and his other white nationalist supporters, Donald Trump has yet to condemn these hateful remarks by his fellow Republican.
King’s remarks were in support of a far right-wing European politician who supports shutting down mosques. King’s words are frightening in that they are reminiscent of propaganda spread during our history’s darkest eras. King’s words insinuate that immigrants and others who do not fit his idea of the “white” Americans are not fit to even be Americans.
As President of the United States, Trump took an oath to protect all Americans, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and so on. This includes Americans who were born here and those who were not. For him to let his fellow Republican get away with such hateful words shows once again that Trump lied when he said he disavowed white nationalism. Demand that Trump do his job and defend all Americans by condemning King’s remarks.
Dear President Trump,
Once again, one of your supporters and fellow Republicans, Steve King, has rallied your white nationalist base and has spread false, harmful anti-immigrant propaganda. Your job as president is to disavow such behavior and condemn such words.
You claimed that you disavow David Duke and other white nationalists like him. However, your silence seems to suggest that you agree with his words. Or, at the very least, it suggests that you want to keep your deplorable base happy. I demand that you start doing your job and condemn King’s words, as well as all other white nationalist rhetoric and actions that have increased in America due to your election.
