Target: Dr. Herbert Fisk Johnson III, CEO of SC Johnson
Goal: Stop testing on animals or provide a relevant timeline on when animal-tested ingredients will be phased out.
Windex, a window cleaner manufactured by SC Johnson, is allegedly still testing the ingredients in uts products on animals. Other SC Johnson products, including Glade and Pledge, are also allegedly tested on animals.
Labs test Windex on the eyes and skin of certain animals to see if it leads to irritation and to discover what can result from ingesting the product. To accomplish this, the chemicals in the products can be injected into the eyes of the animals. In addition, many animals are forced to inhale the toxic gasses for an extended period of time. PETA reports that over 100 million animals die from animal testing every year.
SC Johnson received recent backlash when a photo of dogs used in testing was tied to a story referencing its animal testing history. SC Johnson released a statement in January of this year to emphasize that it has never tested on dogs, but did not deny testing on other animals. In it, the company also links to its full statement on animal testing — which hasn’t been updated since 2014. The statement claims that the company has “given a lot of thought to ending animal testing” but they “aren’t there yet.” The statement released in January claims that other companies are deceptive to their customers when saying that they do not test on animals because their materials are instead tested by the suppliers.
Regardless, SC Johnson should worry about its products and customers more than that of their competitors. Sign this petition to demand that SC Johnson quit testing on animals completely and update the animal testing point of view on the web page that is dated back to 2014. Customers deserve to see a full and relevant timeline of what is or isn’t being done to reach the goal of not testing on animals at all.
Dear Dr. Herbert Fisk Johnson III,
Animal testing is a major issue throughout the world and SC Johnson is still contributing to the problem. It has recently been reported that several of your products (Windex, Glade and Pledge) are allegedly still testing on animals.
The animal testing point of view on SC Johnson’s website is dated back to 2014. In it, you claim that though you haven’t been able to quit animal testing completely, “you are trying.” In it, and also in the statement released in January of this year, you also discuss the deceptiveness of other companies.
Your customers deserve to hear about what you are doing and not about your competitors. That is why we demand that you update the animal testing point of view on your website and provide a timeline of what is or isn’t being done to reach the eventual goal of ending animal testing completely.
