Goal: Stop a pipeline that would wreck miles of protected forestry
A natural gas pipeline that would cut through the Appalachian trail has gained support from local business leaders and Democrat governor Terry McAuliffe. It would be bad enough that the pipeline jeopardizes one of America’s greatest natural resources. However, in order for the Pipeline to even go through, 3.4 miles of forest protected under the “roadless rules” would have to be cleared.
Along with the dangers of cleaning prior protected forest, the pipeline also puts residents, small businesses, and community organizations in the pipeline’s “blast zones”: areas where explosives could have significant impact. The initial draft statement has also come under fire for the number of errors contained in it. Supporting the pipeline ultimately runs the risk of ruining several vistas in Virginia, including Angel’s Rest and McAfee Knob, by having them look out on construction instead of natural wonder. These are places that people come from all across the country to hike and enjoy.
By signing this petition, you’ll be asking the highest office in Virginia to rescind his support for a dangerous pipeline and put himself on the right side of the environment.
Dear Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe,
The Mountain Valley Pipeline has a number of issues with its proposal. By clearing 3.4 miles of protected forests, we open the flood gates to projects that clear more and more protected land. We need to respect the roadless rule as it was put into place.
Along with that, though it is the most dangerous facet of this bill, the pipeline also puts residents, small businesses, and community organizations in a “blast zone”. These areas are ones where explosives could significantly impact everyday people’s workplaces and homes. That, coupled with the number of errors contained in the initial draft, make this a dangerous iniative to support. We cannot risk our natural resources and people’s livelihood for short term economic gain. If we do, we trade views like McAfee Knob and Angel’s Rest for a moment of economic growth, and we may not get them back. These area are not just for Virginians, but for Americans.
Our current administration has shown it has no appreciation for our environment, and we need our progressive leaders to stand in the way of any projects that put temporary economic gain over environmental destruction. This is why we are calling on you to rescind your support for the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
