Save Koalas From Deadly Sexual Disease

Target: Dr. Gordon de Brouwer, Secretary of the Australian Department of Environment and Energy

Goal: Save endangered koala bears from death by chlamydia.

Koalas in Queensland have been dying off to the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia for the past several years. It renders female koalas blind and sterile, and is easily spread to babies via nursing. The spread of this aggressive disease, coupled with other threats such as habitat loss, has qualified the once-thriving koala for a “vulnerable” status on the endangered species list.

Great steps are already being taken by a koala care facility; the efforts to treat the diseased animals are heavily funded with many doctors and scientists hard at work. This is a step in the right direction, and we must take it further until the spread of this disease has stopped entirely. Koalas may not be as critically endangered as other species, but they are still highly vulnerable and need stronger protection to prevent their status from becoming more critical.

At this crucial point in the species’ history, Australia’s conservationists must take urgent steps to save the koala. Sign this petition to demand a more effective solution to this deadly disease.

Dear Dr. de Brouwer,

Many koala bears have died to chlamydia in the past several years; the disease is spread not just through reproduction but when babies nurse from infected mothers. The University of Queensland has several facilities and scientists hard at work on treatments for the infected animals, and while this is a step in the right direction, we must take it further and stop the spread of the disease entirely.

Koalas have been on a slow, subtle decline for the past 20 years, but until recently they were of least concern. The spread of this aggressive disease, coupled with other threats such as habitat loss, has qualified the once-thriving koala for a “vulnerable” status on the endangered species list. That is still a huge risk, and removing one of the major killers of koalas will strengthen their numbers and protect them further. Please do everything you can to help stop the spread of chlamydia so that Australia’s koala population may have a chance to thrive once again.

  1. I hope they quickly find a cure for this disease, for the sake of these beautiful endangered koalas.

  2. I have just heard on the BBC news that on account of climate change the little koala has been forced to take to drinking. As this little treasure is now so much up against it, with the disappearance of its essential and peculiar forestry, climate change and forest fires which occur from time to time, PLEASE do everything you can to combat this chlamydia from which they suffer so horribly and need all your expertise for their treatment and ultimate survival and preservation of the species. Thank you for your time. RA.
