Target: Mitch McConnell, Republican Majority Leader for the U.S. Senate
Goal: Demand that congress pass a bill that encourages reporting of hate crimes and toughens the penalties for convicted offenders.
Federal hate crime laws across the nation could soon be strengthened due to a newly proposed bill.” Proposed by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the bill advises harsher penalties for hate crimes and encourages legal action, even in states without hate crime laws. Take a stand against hate crimes and support this bill.
“Beyond the law, leaders of our nation have to condemn hate crimes in no uncertain terms, consistently, repeatedly, unequivocally,” stated Blumenthal during a news conference at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. Among the changes proposed by the bill, state-run hotlines would be instituted to encourage the reporting of hate crimes. Also, offenders convicted under a 2009 federal hate crimes law could be forced to undergo community service and education centered on their targeted community. Finally, the bill proposes training and incentives for law enforcement officers reporting hate crime data.
Considering the dramatic rise in hate crimes across the country, it is time to take a stand. Sign below and encourage congress to support this bill.
Dear Senator McConnell,
A newly proposed bill takes a harsher stance against hate crimes and those who commit them. Among the changes, this bill empowers victims by giving them the ability to pursue legal action in civil courts. We demand that you support this groundbreaking bill.
“The condemnation by our leaders, beginning with the president of the United States, has to be consistent and repeated. And this kind of condemnation has been lacking,” stated Blumenthal. Representatives from The Anti-Defamation League in Connecticut, the Council on America-Islamic Relations, the Greater Hartford NAACP, and the Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective all pledged their support for Blumenthal’s bill.
Hate crimes are on the rise and we must take action against them. We demand that you support this bill for the safety of all.
