Target: Bill O’Reilly, Fox News Host
Goal: Demand that political commentator apologize for sexist remarks against female journalist.
Fox News political commentator called seasoned journalist Andrea Mitchell “unruly” after she dared to ask Secretary of State Rex Tillerson questions while he was doing a photo-op with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister. As a journalist, Mitchell was doing nothing other than her job as she tried to coax responses from Tillerson, who has not spoken with the press since he was given his position.
Mitchell was also doing nothing different than any other journalist would do, including O’Reilly. It is hypocritical for O’Reilly to attack the female reporter for doing something he does quite frequently to guests on his show — In one ten minute interview, he interrupted President Obama 48 times. Had O’Reilly’s fellow Fox anchor Sean Hannity asked the same questions, he would have undoubtedly been lauded by O’Reilly, not belittled and scolded.
It is obvious that O’Reilly targeted Mitchell, not only because of her place in the so-called “liberal media,” but also because she is a woman in a male-dominated profession. When male journalists persistently ask questions, they are regarded as hard-hitting reporters after the truth. However, when a female does the same, she is called “unruly” by her male counterpart. Demand that O’Reilly apologize for his belittling remarks toward Mitchell.
Dear Mr. O’Reilly,
I am highly disturbed by your recent remarks toward seasoned journalist Andrea Mitchell. After she dared to ask Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (who has not spoken to the press since he was given his position) questions, she was derided by you and labeled “unruly.”
There is inherent sexism present in your remarks. Had the journalist asking Tillerson questions been Sean Hannity, or any other male reporter, you would have undoubtedly referred to him as a “hard-nosed reporter.” However, Mitchell was belittled and scolded for doing nothing other than her job. As someone who has shouted down guests on your own show in order to get answers, you should not have spoken out against Mitchell so quickly. I ask that you give the acclaimed journalist the public apology she deserves.
