Stop Funding Animal Testing Facility Accused of Neglect and Cruelty

Target: Francis S. Collins, Agency Executive for the National Institutes of Health

Goal: Stop funding the University of Pittburgh’s animal testing facilities in light of recent allegations of long-standing abuse and neglect of laboratory animals.

In an undercover investigation, PETA has revealed shocking and widespread instances of alleged abuse and neglect of animals at the University of Pittsburgh’s Rangos Research Facility. Over six months, they heard testimony from workers and captured footage which appeared to show that monkeys were housed in isolation and appeared to be ‘losing their minds’ while also being refused basic veterinary care. They found cases of rabbits with mutilated limbs that had reportedly been forced into unnatural and painful positions for weeks. Other rabbits had apparently been bred with severe deformities, including malformed skulls.

All of these cruel procedures were in part possible due to the funding the University of Pittsburgh receives from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which in turn is supported by U.S. tax dollars. The USDA conducted an investigation of the facility and claimed that no violations had taken place — but what do we make of cases like Gandalf, a monkey who has spent most of his life alone in a tiny cage, who received no veterinary care after his hand was bitten by another monkey, and was offered only ibuprofen for his severe pain? What about the rabbits whose ligaments were severed to recreate traumatic knee injuries, and forced to endure weeks immobilized in apparent agony? We must demand that our tax money is put to better use and must not be used to fund the torture and neglect of animals.

The use of animals in research, particularly as the subjects of experimental tests, is an outdated scientific practice which subjects thousands of animals to miserable lives of suffering and neglect. It exploits animals and treats them as expendable commodities, with only limited benefit to “the greater good.” Alternatives to animal testing should be made a top priority for medical research, and should be given adequate funding to ensure they are made widely available as soon as possible. Sign this petition to demand that the NIH stop funding this cruel research facility, and instead divert such funding to go toward finding better research alternatives.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Executive Collins,

The University of Pittsburgh’s Rangos Research Facility has been the subject of an in-depth investigation by PETA, which revealed shocking instances of alleged animal abuse and neglect. Monkeys were reportedly found caged in isolation, demonstrating stress and boredom-induced pacing behaviors, while rabbits were found with mutilated limbs that had been forced into unnatural positions. These acts of cruelty are unacceptable, and should not be footed by the U.S. taxpayer.

Technologies are being developed which could very well render animal testing obsolete, which should put an end to this horrific scientific practice. We, the undersigned, demand that you stop funding the University of Pittsburgh’s animal research program and divert these funds toward alternatives to animal testing.

Sincerely,
