Investigate Islamic State’s Ongoing Ethnic Genocide

Target: António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General

Goal: Act against genocide by backing U.K.-led probe of the so-called Islamic State.

The Islamic State (IS) has said it will “destroy” the Yazidi ethnic group in Iraq by murder, rape, and forced conversion, according to lawyer Amal Clooney, who spoke at the U.N. and demanded it take action against this genocide. Reports show that IS has already killed, enslaved, and committed horrific atrocities against Yazidis, and as long ago as last year, the U.N. identified these actions as genocide, and yet has still done nothing.

The U.K. is leading a proposed investigation into these atrocities, and Mrs. Clooney urged the U.N. to support this investigation and do everything in its power to prepare for it, even if it is not supported by the Iraqi Prime Minister. She said, “The U.N. was created as the world’s way of saying ‘never again’ to the genocide perpetrated by the Nazis. And yet here we are, 70 years later, discussing the U.N.’s inaction in the face of a genocide that we all know about, and that is ongoing…Don’t let ISIS [Islamic State] get away with genocide.” Sign below to demand that the U.N. heed this advice and take action.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary-General Guterres,

The atrocities being committed by IS in Iraq against the Yazidi people clearly qualify as genocide, and it is the responsibility of the U.N. to act. As lawyer Amal Clooney reminded U.N. members, the United Nations was established for the exact purpose of preventing this horrific treatment of people, and to ignore it is unacceptable and wrong.

Mrs. Clooney urged the U.N. to back the U.K.-led probe into the actions of IS, and to wait no longer to take action regardless of whether or not the Iraqi government requests and inquiry. I urge you to follow her advice, and not to allow this inhumane genocide to continue any longer.

Sincerely,
