Education Leader Must Apologize for Saying He’d Like to Abuse Public Official

Target: Gary Naeyaert, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Education Project

Goal: Issue a public apology for making comments about wanting to physically abuse a public official.

Gary Naeyaert resigned from his position as executive director of the Great Lakes Education Project, a school choice advocacy group, after saying that he would like to”shake” a public official “like I like to shake my wife.”A statement from the GLEP website describes the group as a “bi-partisan, non-profit advocacy organization supporting quality choices in public education for all Michigan students.” This is not the kind of man who should have such a position in the education department.

The U.S. Education Department has so far not commented on his resignation, despite the highly damaging potential his comments have left for abuse victims. While Naeyeart has resigned, he never apologized for the abusive remarks. The kind of statements made by Mr. Naeyart are dangerous because they perpetuate and even promote domestic violence. There should be no room in any education project for people who openly talk about wanting to wrongly put their hands on someone. Please add your signature to the petition below to demand that Naeyart retract his disgusting statement and issue a public apology to the public official he targeted.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Naeyaert,

It has been brought to our attention that you have resigned from your position as executive director of the Great Lakes Education Project after making the deplorable remarks about putting your hands on a public official. We find your remarks to be severely damaging to the community and especially to survivors and victims of abuse.

When you said that you would “like to shake” the public official “like you like to shake your wife,” it only sounded as if you were making light of domestic abuse. By making statements like this, you are perpetuating abuse. We, the undersigned, demand that you issue a public apology for the damaging remarks.

Sincerely,

  1. His poor wife! She should leave him!
And he should apologize for his horrible statement, to show very clearly that this kind of talk is unacceptable, and that abuse itself is unacceptable.
