Demand Resignation of Senator Accused of Lying About His Degree

Target: Mark Chelgren, Iowa State Senator

Goal: Resign from the office of Iowa state senator in light of evidence that you lied about your education.

Republican lawmaker Mark Chelgren — who has been called “the Donald Trump of Iowa”– claimed to have a business degree from a management school called Forbco, which is actually a company that runs a Sizzler steakhouse franchise. His hometown newspaper is calling for his resignation, stating that his integrity is gone and he has turned the town into a “national punchline.”

Chelgren denied inflating his resume and called the Forbco reference on the GOP website a mistake. He then attacked NBC’s news report, saying, “I have an associate’s degree. They say I don’t have a degree. Anybody with an associate’s degree should be offended.” However this too appears to be a lie; a spokesman for the University of California at Riverside, where Chelgren claims to have earned his degree, confirmed that he attended the university, but only for one year, and never earned a degree. This man’s reported lies make him unfit to represent his state. Sign below to demand his resignation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Chelgren,

As a representative of the people of the state of Iowa, you have an obligation to your constituents to uphold a standard of honesty and integrity. As your hometown newspaper stated, you have fallen short of this standard by lying about your qualifications, and betrayed the trust of those who supported you.

Even if it is true that the reference to Forbco as a business school was an error on the GOP website, you continued to make false claims about earning an associate’s degree from a university that publicly stated that although you attended, you never earned a degree. In light of these lies, I urge you to resign from the position of state senator.

Sincerely,
